What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was commonly used in construction materials due to its strong and fire-resistant properties. However, it was later discovered that exposure to asbestos fibers can cause serious health issues, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. As a result, the use of asbestos in construction materials has been banned in many countries.

The Importance of Asbestos Testing

Asbestos, once mined in Libby, Montana, served as a binding agent in numerous construction materials until approximately 1990. Recognized later as a cancer-causing substance, it is now prohibited in any building materials in Canada.

The peril arises when asbestos becomes airborne, notably during the renovation of older homes. Potentially affected materials encompass:

  • Window caulking
  • Paint
  • Parging
  • Stucco
  • Asphalt
  • Drywall joint compound or stipple
  • Lathe in plaster
  • Flooring or attic insulation

Disturbing Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) through activities like demolishing drywall joint compound or working in the attic releases airborne asbestos particles. Once airborne, these particles can embed themselves in the lungs, becoming unremovable. Improper disposal may lead to the contamination of an entire house, posing risks to everyone within.

Our Asbestos Testing Services

At Double Clean Restoration, we rely on third-party testing to guarantee precise results for our clients. Utilizing a qualified asbestos testing laboratory is crucial, as it assesses the concentration of asbestos fibers in the air before commencing any work. In adherence to Alberta Government regulations, substantiating the improvement in air quality post-asbestos remediation is mandatory. Following the initial asbestos testing, we establish a containment system for the work area, deploying air scrubbers and implementing negative pressure containment. Throughout the asbestos removal process, an occupational air sample test is conducted to ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by our asbestos remediators.

Safe and Efficient Abatement Asbestos

If asbestos is found in your building, it is essential to have it removed by trained professionals. Our team is equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and equipment to safely remove asbestos-containing materials from your property. We strictly follow all safety regulations and guidelines to minimize any risk of exposure.

Our Asbestos Insulation Removal Services

Asbestos insulation was commonly used in homes and buildings for its fire-retardant properties. However, over time it can deteriorate and release asbestos fibers into the air. If your property has asbestos insulation, our team can safely remove it to ensure the safety of you and your family.

Cost of Asbestos Insulation Removal Services

The pricing for asbestos testing starts at $300 and varies based on the number of samples taken and the specific type of asbestos testing required. For standard building materials, a one-liter sample is taken. We offer three regular asbestos test samples for a fee ranging from $300 to $350, and an option for unlimited asbestos test samples is available for $800. In the case of testing vermiculite (old attic insulation resembling rabbit food), a distinct test called Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) is employed. It is advisable to presume that vermiculite contains asbestos and treat it accordingly.
